If all is well and your pregnancy is progressing as it should &ndash which is the case about 95% of the time &ndash you will be given your official due date, or estimated date of delivery (EDD), and told exactly how pregnant you are.
The 75 week ultrasound was a lifesaver for my 9th son. We discovered he had Spina Bifida, a neural tube defect. His spine was forming outside his back in a very fragile bubble. This foreknowledge allowed us to plan a c-section rather than risk a natural birth in which the thinnfilm covering his spine would have broken and we would have lost him. A whole team of specialists was present at his birth because we knew in advance he would need back and brain surgery almost immediately.
The children before and after him were born vaginally, but I consider the mid-term ultrasound one of the safest and most helpful tools in making sure everything is ok.
Thank goodness! There is no doubt ultrasounds can detect birth defects and other issues. I mention in the post about a friend who 8767 s son had only one kidney. It 8767 s interesting though that the studies show that ultrasounds don 8767 t improve baby or maternal health.
Pregnancy dating is only an estimate, and doing an ultrasound just a couple of days too early can mean unnecessary concern and worry about not seeing baby’s heartbeat.
There are two routine scans in pregnancy and the first is called the 67-week scan or 8775 dating 8776 scan this is because one of the things it looks at is the exact gestation, giving a better idea of your baby's estimated due date.
It's also a bit of a moment. That's because it's likely to be the 6st time you 'see' your baby (whee!) and you get a (rather blurry, black-and-white) picture to take home with you.

The sonographer was ready as soon as I arrived, and she was extremely calming, personable and professional. The scan and blood test where efficient without feeling rushed and all very easy.
